Launched in 1996, the Boxster brought Porsche's mid-engined roadster formula to a wider audience, and four generations later — 986, 987, 981, and today's 718 — it remains one of the most affordable ways into Porsche ownership. That also means many older Boxsters have had several owners and patchy maintenance. A VIN check on a used Boxster, Boxster S, or 718 Boxster brings together the accident, ownership, mileage, and recall history that a clean-looking roadster won't reveal on its own.
What you can check
A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a unique 17-character code that serves as your Porsche Boxster's fingerprint. Checking your VIN provides crucial information about:
Your Boxster's VIN can be located in several places:
Boxster VINs start with WP0, Porsche's manufacturer code for its sports cars. The 10th character encodes the model year and the 11th the assembly plant — besides Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, many 986 and 987 Boxsters were built under contract by Valmet in Uusikaupunki, Finland. The vehicle data label lists the factory option codes, so you can confirm the original specification.
Every Porsche Boxster carries a unique 17-character VIN. Here's what each part of the number means — select any section to see the details for your Porsche Boxster.

Is the IMS bearing a concern on every Boxster?
No — it applies to the M96/M97 engines in the 986 and early 987 (model years up to 2008). The 987.2 (from 2009), 981, and 718 use different engines without this bearing design, so IMS evidence matters most on 1997–2008 cars.
What should I check on a Boxster's soft top?
Cycle the roof fully several times, look for torn fabric or worn seals, and check the footwells for water staining. On early 986 cars, also inspect the plastic rear window for clouding or cracks.
