How the free VIN check works

  1. Enter the 17-character VIN

A VIN has exactly 17 characters: the digits 0–9 and capital letters. I, O and Q are never used, so they can’t be confused with 1 and 0.

  2. See the decoded specifications

We decode the VIN with the vehicle database of the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and show the make, model, model year, body style, engine, drivetrain and assembly plant, where the manufacturer has reported them.

  3. Check recalls and complaints

For the decoded make, model and year, we list NHTSA safety recalls and owner complaints, including reported crashes, fires and injuries.

  4. Decide whether you need the full history

Accident, title, mileage and theft records are not part of the free check. They are in the full vehicle history report from our partner carVertical, which is sold separately.

Vehicles built for markets outside North America are often missing from the NHTSA database. If the make, model or year can’t be identified, you are taken to carVertical to continue the check.

Where can I find my VIN?

  • Bottom-right corner of the windshield
  • Lower part of the “B pillar” (door frame)
  • Engine compartment
  • On the vehicle registration certificate and insurance documents

Compare the VIN on the car with the one in its documents. If they don’t match, ask the seller why before you buy.
