The 911 has been in continuous production since 1964 — air-cooled up to the 993 (1994–1998), then water-cooled through the 996, 997, 991 and today's 992. Few sports cars hold their value as well, which is exactly why used 911s attract mileage rollback and cosmetic-only accident repairs. A VIN check on a used 911 Carrera, Turbo, or GT3 brings together the accident, ownership, mileage, and recall history that a freshly detailed car won't reveal on its own.
What you can check
A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a unique 17-character code that serves as your Porsche 911's fingerprint. Checking your VIN provides crucial information about:
Your 911's VIN can be located in several places:
Every 911 VIN starts with WP0, Porsche's manufacturer code for its sports cars and sedans. The 10th character encodes the model year and the 11th the assembly plant — S for Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, where the 911 is built. The vehicle data label also lists the factory option codes, the quickest way to confirm a car's original specification.
Every Porsche 911 carries a unique 17-character VIN. Here's what each part of the number means — select any section to see the details for your Porsche 911.

Which 911 generations are affected by the IMS bearing issue?
The IMS concern applies to the M96/M97 engines in the 996 Carrera and the 997.1 Carrera (roughly 1999–2008). The Turbo, GT2, and GT3 versions of those generations use the Mezger engine, and the 997.2 Carrera (from 2009), 991, and 992 use later engine designs without this bearing.
Can a VIN check tell me whether a 911 has been used on track?
A VIN check surfaces reported accidents, insurance claims, and title records — track use that never involved an insurer won't appear. For any 911, pair the report with a specialist pre-purchase inspection that includes a DME over-rev readout.
